University of Illinois receives almost $1 million for algal bloom research

The funded project will produce and scale up a treatment system to capture excess nutrients from subsurface drainage in agricultural fields, recycle the nutrient-captured biochar as a slow-release fertilizer, and keep nutrients in the closed agricultural loop.

Local program helping farmers battle soil erosion, drainage issues

Bernie Kottelenberg, a dairy, hog and grain producer in Hillsburgh, Ont., built a drainage system to halt soil erosion at the edge of his field, and designed a tank to capture manure and keep it from leaking into the water system.
