For the last 10 years, Iowa has zeroed in on nutrient reduction with the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy (INRS). State strategies, grown out of the work of the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Task Force, focused on both point sources and non-point sources. The science- and technology-based approach outlines the voluntary efforts to reduce nutrients in surface water from both sources, which range from wastewater treatment plants and farm fields. We take a look at the collective efforts to reduce P and N runoff in Iowa.
