Over the last 10 years, Ontario farmer Timo Brielmann and his family have transformed their cattle operation into an 8,800-acre grain farm – still not an incredibly common operation where Brielmann resides, in the Rainy River district in Northwestern Ontario. Even less common in the northern parts of the province is subsurface drainage, although recent provincial investments have prompted an increase in the installation of tile drainage to support the region’s growing agriculture industry. Brielmann and contractor Jesse Tait discuss the intricacies of draining in the North and the challenges posed environmentally, economically and socially.
