Researchers are trying to find ways to reduce pollution levels in waterways, which includes mapping their origin in farmers’ fields. But this task isn’t easy: although drainage ditches are visible from the air, the tile drainage systems are buried underground. This makes it difficult to map these systems or calculate their impacts. Finding better ways to map these systems is the mission of Ruijie Zeng, assistant professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University and speaker at the 2024 North American Drainage Conference.
