The Engineering and Geoscience Professions (EGP) Act is the governing legislation that enables APEGA to regulate the engineering and geoscience professions in Alberta. This important Act has not been significantly revised in more than 40 years—despite major advances in these respective professions.

The practices of engineering and geoscience continue to evolve, as do business, industry, and society. It is imperative that the corresponding legislation evolves accordingly to prevent public harm. Today, we are focused on streamlining and modernizing the Act to better align its directives with current practices in safety and quality. It’s time these changes were brought into legislation.

For more than 100 years, APEGA has been the regulatory authority on ethical, professional, and technical competency for the engineering and geoscience professions—ensuring Albertans are protected each and every day. With more than 160 recommended revisions, these updates to the EGP Act will support ongoing public safety, improve transparency, and streamline regulations and accountability, as well as provide meaningful consequences for those who fail to meet these standards.

APEGA members have been instrumental in shaping these proposed changes. We have conducted more than five rounds of stakeholder consultations and collected more than 6,000 comments from members and permit holders since the consultations began in 2014.

We are long overdue for an EGP Act that aligns with modern quality and safety standards.
