Global sales of plug-in electric vehicles nearly doubled in 2021, with an estimated 6 million EVs sold compared to 3.1 million in 2020. According to Statistics Canada, new registrations of zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) hit an important milestone in 2021, with ZEVs comprising of 5.2% of all new motor vehicles registered. With Canada’s mandate to have EVs make up 50% of new car sales by 2030, along with improved battery life, a wider selection of EV models on the market, rebate programs, and increased environmental concern, this upward trend will only continue.
