The total value of building permits in Canada rose 2.3% in May 2022 to $12.1 billion. Commercial permit values increased sharply by 15.6% in May, driven by British Columbia with a whopping overall increase of 73.8% for the month. In the institutional component, gains were again led by The Garden Province.

More than half are already investing, while 40% plan to make energy efficiency improvements this year.

Statistics Canada reports investment in building construction edged down 0.2% to $20.6 billion in May. If you exclude Ontario, investment actually increased 1.1% nation-wide. Many of Ontario’s unionized construction workers were on strike during the month, notes Statscan. “These strikes caused significant delays in numerous residential and non-residential construction projects throughout the province.”
