The Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship selected Ihor Cap as the recipient of the 2022 Red Seal Award of Excellence. The award is given annually to one apprenticeship authority staff member who demonstrates “inspiring leadership” in the development and promotion of apprenticeship and skilled trades certification.

AD associates from Canada, the United States and Mexico came together for a volunteer event at AD’s headquarters in Wayne, Pa., to sew 125 colourful pillowcases with the aim of bringing comfort to young hospital patients and their families. Afterward, AD presented the leaders of Ryan’s Case with a cheque for $9510—raised by AD associates from multiple fundraising activities—in addition to donated supplies.

The Carrefour du Plateau is a 242,000-sf shopping centre featuring several major retail outlets, including Canadian Tire, IGA, Sports Experts and Jean-Coutu. Its owner, First Capital REIT, had a mandate to convert all of its parking lots to LED lighting, explains Concept Illumination’s Daniel Herz, “but this property is a bit of an outlier because of its size. It’s quite large”. The Carrefour du Plateau retrofit was, in fact, the largest project that First Capital had ever tasked Concept with completing.

With target energization in Spring/Summer 2023, the Métis Crossing Solar Project will generate enough electricity to power the Métis Nation of Alberta and affiliate buildings—an amount equivalent to about 1200 homes. This will offset MNA’s electricity use and displace 4700 tonnes of CO2e annually. The project is a collaboration between the Métis Nation, Town of Smoky Lake, and Smoky Lake County.

Awasis Solar LP and its partners recently celebrated the commissioning of the Awasis Solar Project—a 10-MW solar power generation project on Cowessess land at the site of the existing Cowessess Renewable Energy Storage Facility. The project will reduce GHG emissions by about 14,000 tonnes CO2e in the first year of operations, and by roughly 350,000 tonnes CO2e over the 35-year expected life of the project.

The stapler replaces manual cable-fastening methods, says the tool maker, and is twice as fast as manual hammer stapling. Without battery, the tool weighs 4.7 lb and is designed primarily for fastening NM-B (i.e. Romex) wires and cables, but can also be used for low-voltage applications. A proprietary cable guide helps drive staples safely and accurately over the cable.

John Paul II Catholic Secondary School in Ontario’s London District Catholic School Board is the first retrofitted carbon neutral school in Canada. The implemented improvements will greatly reduce GHG emissions, as systems previously required to heat, cool and provide electricity to the school have been brought to near zero emissions.

While Canada has set net-zero goals for 2050, the associated legislation does not include clear-cut information about what businesses should do to help meet that target. Not surprisingly, some business leaders admit they will, instead, invent net-zero definitions for their companies.
