British Columbia has provided $5 million to the Industry Training Authority (ITA) so that more trades workers can start an apprenticeship or upgrade their skills at recognized post-secondary and trades training providers across the province. “Approximately 85,000 additional job openings are expected in the trades in BC by 2031,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training.

Ontario Power Generation will work with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy to deploy a small modular reactor (the BWRX-300) at the Darlington New Nuclear site—the only site in Canada, says OPG, currently licensed for a new nuclear build. “We know nuclear is a key proven zero-emissions baseload energy source that will help us achieve net zero as a company by 2040 [...]” said Ken Hartwick, OPG president & CEO.

Through their joint venture partnership, Alltrade Industrial Contractors Inc. and SkyFire Energy Inc. have embarked upon another utility-scale renewable energy project in Newell County, near Brooks, Alta. “Our team is excited to be working closely with Elemental Energy on this key utility-scale solar project utilizing proven single-axis tracking technology paired with bifacial solar modules,” said Alltrade’s Kevin Ritzmann, senior director, Western Canada.

British Columbia Institute of Technology’s trades and technology programs will soon have access to new training facilities, courtesy of an investment of $162.6 million in the Trades & Technology Complex (TTC) at the Burnaby campus. The province is providing $136.6 million while BCIT is providing $26 million toward the first phase of the TTC (which includes contributions from industry partners).

Josie Erzetic became president & CEO of Ontario’s Electrical Safety Authority, replacing David Collie. Prior to this appointment, she served as ESA’s chief regulatory officer and general counsel, managing areas such as licensing, electrical safety, codes and technical standards, and product safety. In addition, she oversaw the activities related to communications, government and stakeholder relations.
