Amendments to Nova Scotia’s Electricity Act will open the door for more storage solutions for renewable electricity. “These amendments encourage innovation and early adoption of battery technology in the province,” said Tory Rushton, Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables. Changes to the act will allow the department to issue requests for proposals for energy storage solutions, like large-scale batteries. Currently, only Nova Scotia Power is permitted to own such storage methods.

ABB is investing $40 million in Albuquerque, N.M., toward a new Installation Products Division manufacturing facility for the production of Elastimold cable accessory solutions, thereby accelerating “our ability to deliver high-demand electrical products our partners rely on to manage today’s needs and prepare for tomorrow’s energy demands,” said ABB‘s Matthias Heilmann. With over 75,000 miles of underground cabling estimated to be in place by 2040 across the U.S. alone, ABB says the new facility will meet anticipated demand.

With the aim of reducing illegal and unsafe electrical installations across Ontario, the Electrical Safety Authority has been empowered to impose “administrative” (financial) penalties beginning April 1, 2023. Depending on the nature of the contravention, these penalties can go as high as $10,000 per penalty. Monies collected will go directly toward funding electrical safety and consumer awareness initiatives across Ontario, says ESA.

Manitoba Prompt Payment (MBPP)—a coalition of 32 trade associations and unions across the province—salutes James Teitsma, Minister of Consumer Protection and Government Services, for bringing forward the first reading of Bill 38, The Builders’ Liens Amendment Act (Prompt Payment). MBPP exists for the sole purpose of persuading the Manitoba government “that delinquent payment is a growing problem in the construction industry, and that legislation is needed to ensure that money flows as it is intended down through the contractor supply chain”.
