The Government of Canada and IBEW Local 2228 reached a tentative settlement that, upon ratification, will apply to about 1100 public service employees in the Electronics bargaining unit. The Electronics group comprises technologists and technicians who specialize in the installation and maintenance of electronics equipment for weather facilities, radio frequency allocation and monitoring, as well as air, land, and marine transportation systems.

Emissions Reduction Alberta is launching a funding competition to advance technologies that “enable a more resilient, efficient, and reliable energy system”. The $50-million “Reshaping Energy Systems” call for proposals is exploring energy transport and distribution technology, energy storage, digital solutions for energy management, demonstrating grid-interactive building efficiency technologies, low-emission vehicle infrastructure and fleets. “The pace of technological innovation in the decarbonization of the electrical distribution system requires continuous study and testing of any new solutions [...]” said Grant Wiens, director, Engineering, Fortis.

Siemens Canada is partnering with Humber College to develop a Sustainable Microgrid and Renewable Technology lab (SMART lab) at the latter’s North Campus. “An effective energy transition to enable decarbonization is a complex effort, and it requires a growing system of partners to tackle this enormous challenge,” said Faisal Kazi, president & CEO, Siemens Canada. The SMART lab is an educational and experimental environment designed to train students and professionals in the use of a microgrid system, and to conduct research with industry partners.
