BuildForce launches program for exploring careers in construction

A new program launched by BuildForce Canada—Construction Career Pathways—aims to connect job seekers and employers across Canada’s construction sector. “Construction is at nearly full employment in most regions across the country, and demands are growing [...],” said Bill Ferreira, executive director. As a result, “Many companies are finding it hard to hire to respond to those demands”.

Lion’s new battery factory for medium- and heavy-duty EVs

The Lion Electric Co.—a manufacturer of all-electric medium- and heavy-duty vehicles—has officially inaugurated its new lithium-ion battery manufacturing factory. “This official opening celebrates the culmination of several years of efforts that now allow us to control the manufacturing and integration of one of the fundamental components in the production of electric vehicles and the electrification of transportation—namely the battery,” said Marc Bédard, Lion’s CEO and founder.

Canada Post shows off its new electric C250s in Nanaimo

Canada Post Corp. announced its Nanaimo, B.C., depot will be the first to deploy battery electric corporate delivery vehicles. The depot will use 14 fully electric cargo vans for collection and delivery services, replacing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Proposed Opitciwan biomass cogen plant ticks “every box”

“Replacing the current diesel plant with one that’s powered by forest biomass from the sawmill is a huge step forward,” said Denis Clary, president, Société en commandite Onimiskiw Opitciwan. With an installed capacity of 4.8 MW, the plant is scheduled for commissioning in July 2026. The 25-year agreement, which has the option of a 15-year extension, also involves the acquisition and installation of a dryer at the Opitciwan sawmill. » Read more

Ontario steps up with “bricks-and-mortar dollars” for training centres

The province is adding $224 million in additional funding to its Skills Development Fund to build and upgrade skilled trades training centres. “The Electrical Contractors Association of Ontario welcomes the Ontario government’s new initiative to provide capital training grants to employers, unions, and other training providers in the construction sector,” said ECAO’s Graeme Aitken. “Minister [Monte] McNaughton’s efforts to assist contractors with their capital training requirements is incredibly positive.” » Read more
