“The lawsuit is another step we are taking to protect our critical infrastructure against recurring theft and vandalism,” said Bell’s Nick Payant. Despite extra alarms, security, and support from local law enforcement, Payant says the company still saw over 170 incidents of vandalism in the last 15 months—largely in New Brunswick, Ontario and northern Quebec—resulting in over $3 million in damages to critical infrastructure and hundreds of hours of service interruption for customers.

Ontario has seen a whopping 310% increase in powerline contacts by the general public since 2019, says the province’s Electrical Safety Authority, citing 19 fatalities and 1393 overhead powerline contacts between 2012 and 2021. While many powerline contacts can be attributed to weather-related events, ESA says almost a third involve accidental contacts from recreational activities, such as tree pruning, high-reach equipment and outdoor home renovations.

Ottawa has opened the call for proposals for the Zero-Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative—a pilot that will fund Indigenous-led awareness and education projects “that help increase knowledge and confidence” in electric and low-emission vehicles, and clean fuels. Successful applicants from Indigenous-led or -owned organizations could each receive contributions of up to 75% of the total eligible project costs, with a maximum funding contribution of up to $150,000 per year for a project.
