Keen Utility—a provider of safety footwear and the work boot division of Keen Inc.—has announced the recipients of its “She Builds” grant program (2023). Among the six 2023 recipient organizations is British Columbia Institute of Technology’s “Trades Discovery for Women” program which, for eligible students, has grants available to cover tuition, student fees, and most supplies. BCIT’s Trades Discovery programs prepare participants to enter and complete trades/technical training, or seek apprenticeship.

On June 15, Jacson T. pleaded guilty and was convicted in Hamilton, Ont., for operating an electrical contracting business without an electrical contractor’s licence. He was ordered to pay a $7500 fine, plus a victim surcharge of $1875, for work he conducted at a Hamilton residential property. The defendant was hired by a homeowner for a basement renovation, which included electrical, painting, and the addition of a new bathroom.

Apprenticeship registrations have increased by 24% in the last year—from 21,971 to 27,319—reports the Government of Ontario. This includes a 28% increase among women. “There is as much merit in being an electrician or a carpenter as there is in being an architect or a lawyer,” said Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, adding that “we need to ensure students and jobseekers know about the rewarding life-long careers waiting for them in the skilled trades.”
