The Society of United Professionals reports that it and Ontario’s Electrical Safety Authority have reached a settlement to renew their collective agreement, ending the strike that commenced September 20. The positions of ESA employees represented by the Society range from product safety specialists and engineers to communications, IT technicians, analysts, and technical advisors. Those employees voted yesterday to ratify the agreement, ending the two-week strike.

The Government of Canada is contributing $50 million to the 200-MW Bekevar Wind Power Project, which is being delivered in partnership with the Cowessess First Nation and Innagreen Investments. Located south of Kipling, Sask., the project will consist of 36 turbines; an underground medium-voltage electrical collector system; access roads; a substation; two permanent meteorological towers; an operations and maintenance building; and a 10-km long transmission line to connect the project to the provincial grid.

Electrical distributors, primarily in Ontario, are being broken into at an alarming rate—and everything suggests these are not isolated incidents. The No. 1 products being stolen are wire and cable, but the list also includes circuit breakers, receptacles, LED light fixtures and lamps, power tools, power bars/extension cords, lighting controls and sensors, and other building products. Regions with the highest break-in activity are: Halton (20), York (18), Peel (17), Waterloo (16), and Durham County (15).

With a total limit of up to $2.9 billion US, ABB says EDC’s support will provide its customers with financing and insurance solutions “for strategic electrification and automation projects in the sectors of clean technologies, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, and resources of the future”.

Eaton announced it is investing $150 million to increase the supply of its electrical power distribution solutions for customers across North America. As part this investment, the company is committing $80 million to “significantly expand” its manufacturing footprint in El Paso, Texas, creating over 600 new skilled jobs, opening a new facility, and increasing capacity at its existing manufacturing plant.
