ABB has broken ground on a 90,000-sf facility in Albuquerque, N.M., to expand production of Elastimold cable accessory solutions for undergrounding, grid hardening and wildfire mitigation projects. The over $40-million investment by ABB Installation Products is expected to begin operations in late 2024.

Investment in building construction rose 1.7% to $19.8 billion in November, reports Statistics Canada. Investment in residential building construction increased 2.2% to $13.7 billion in November. The increase in November was led by more activity in new construction in Nova Scotia (+10.4%), Alberta (+4.4%), Ontario (+4.1%), British Columbia (+2.3%), and Quebec (+1.0%).

A $1-billion lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing facility is coming to Maple Ridge, B.C. Constructed by battery company E-One Moli, the new facility is expected to create up to 350 new jobs while securing over 100 existing positions. The plan, says E-One, is to produce up to 135 million battery cells per year, and become the largest factory in Canada for high-performance lithium-ion battery cells.

Imark Canada has appointed Jennifer Eastman to the position of president, replacing Jim Taggart, who is retiring. “Jennifer has an excellent reputation for building strong relationships and collaborating with colleagues,” said Jerry Knight, Imark Electrical. “She has extensive knowledge of the electrical wholesaling industry. We are confident that she will lead Imark Canada to even greater heights.”

The total monthly value of building permits in Canada decreased 3.9% from October 2023 to $10.9 billion in November, reports Statistics Canada, with declines posted across almost all building types. All three non-residential components—industrial, commercial, institutional—declined, with the commercial component decreasing for the third consecutive month, down 3.5% from October.
