The total value of building permits across Canada in May was $11.7 billion, down 12.2% from a record high of $13.4 billion in April, reports Statistics Canada. British Columbia led the national decline in May with a significant drop of 50.7% after experiencing a record high for the total value of building permits issued in April. Excluding British Columbia, the total value of building permits for the remaining provinces and the territories edged down 0.7% in May.

In a joint recall with Health Canada and the U.S. CPSC, Best Lighting Products is recalling high-bay LED light fixtures due to fire hazard. At issue: Plastic pins securing the LED board can degrade, allowing the energized board to come loose and contact the lens or combustible materials, posing a fire hazard. As of July 3, 2024, the company has received no reports of fire or injury in Canada. In the United States, the company has received three reports of fire and no reports of injury.

At a special meeting, Imark Electrical shareholders voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposal to merge with AD (Affiliated Distributors). “Industry response to the merger announcement has been universally positive within the AD and Imark Electrical distributor communities, and within the electrical supplier community,” said Bob Smith, Imark Electrical.

A new report prepared by BuildForce Canada—“Building a greener future”—considers the implications of retrofitting existing buildings to improve their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprints in support of Ottawa’s goal to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. The report suggests we could require as many as 57,000 additional construction workers to get this done.
