The next general election in British Columbia is scheduled for October 19. To turn the spotlight on the construction industry, the Vancouver Regional Construction Association and BC Construction Association argue “it’s high time the sector had its own dedicated voice at the legislature in Victoria”. To that end, the associations are proposing the creation of the provincial cabinet role: Minister of Construction.

Glen Dimplex Americas is recalling Cadet-branded Apex72 high wall electric heaters which may malfunction and fail to turn on, causing the unit to overheat and ignite internally, posing a fire hazard. The firm has received one report of a heater fan malfunctioning and causing the unit to ignite. No injuries have been reported.

Investment in building construction decreased 1.7% to $20.9 billion in July 2024, following increases in May (+0.7%) and June (+2.7%), reports Statistics Canada. Investment in non-residential construction edged down 0.4% to $6.3 billion. The industrial component decreased 2.1% (-$28.2 million) to $1.3 billion in July, marking its fourth consecutive monthly decline.

BC Hydro has announced a new incentive program that will offer rebates for the installation of solar panels and battery energy storage systems in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings, reports the Union of BC Municipalities, adding that the program will also provide up to $50,000-$150,000 in rebates for local governments, schools, and businesses.
