Several electricity projects in Nova Scotia will benefit from their share of over $192 million in funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Smart Renewables & Electrification Pathways (SREP) and Electricity Pre-development programs, including Benjamin Mill Wind LP, Nova Scotia Power Inc., Higgins Mountain Wind Farm LP, and Wedgeport Wind Farm LP.

Awareness campaigns, buying guides and demonstration projects are among the latest initiatives to split $7.5 million in funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emissions Vehicles Awareness Initiative. Of the $7.5 million in total funding, $4,236,774 is earmarked for medium- to heavy-duty vehicle (MHDV) initiatives and $1,947,928 for light-duty vehicle (LDVs) initiatives (with $1,321,750 slated for clean fuels e.g. hydrogen).

The electrification of transit buses presents an immediate and impactful solution for reducing GHG emissions, and air and noise pollution for communities. However, transitioning from fossil fuel-powered buses to electric alternatives is not as simple as replacing one for the other and installing chargers. It requires an understanding of the available types of electric buses, their corresponding charging systems, and best practices for a seamless process.

While Electrical Contractors Association of BC is encouraged by the private sector responding so favourably to BC Hydro’s call for new renewable power-generation projects, they warn: “We need to ensure that BC has the skilled tradespeople and construction professionals required [...] “This will require new investment to increase training seats and operating funds for training facilities.”
