In Manitoba, regulatory changes are restoring a 1:1 apprentice-to-journeyman ratio. “IBEW 2085 strongly opposed the 2:1 ratio because, for someone training to be an electrician, proper supervision can be a matter of life and death,” said Dave McPhail, business manager. “Restoring the ratio to 1:1 means that this government is serious about building Manitoba with highly skilled, properly trained Red Seals.”

Statistics Canada released its building construction price indexes for the third quarter of 2024. Nationally, residential building construction costs increased 0.9% in Q3 2024, following a 1.0% increase in the previous quarter. Non-residential building construction costs rose 0.5% during this period, following a 1.4% increase in the previous quarter. Builders noted that the industry continues to face cost pressure from skilled labour shortages, land prices and availability, and building code changes.

Westinghouse Electric Co. has signed Memorandums of Understanding with three Canadian suppliers to support nuclear new-builds in Canada and around the world.
