The population of Canada is aging, with older adults—those aged 65 or above—being the fastest-growing demographic. If given the choice, over 85% of us would prefer to age in place within our own homes and communities. This represents a huge opportunity for electrical professionals to provide forward-thinking homeowners with the supports they need now (or down the road) to enable aging in place.

Humber Polytechnic celebrated its newly expanded Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology, which will provide students with hands-on experiences in fields such as electrical techniques, industrial woodworking, heating, refrigeration and air-conditioning, among others. “Skilled trades professionals are the backbone of our economy, and we’re proud to offer facilities to ensure they receive the highest level of training,” said Humber president & CEO Ann Marie Vaughan.

More than 100 Ontario secondary school students had the opportunity to learn about careers in electric vehicles, sustainable energy, and critical mineral extraction/processing. Canadore College welcomed them at its Innovation Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Prototyping, where they attended workshops on critical minerals and EV battery materials and testing, and got to experience Canadore’s Motive Power Zero Emission Training Centre.

A global survey conducted by Frost & Sullivan finds that while electric vehicle adoption rates vary by business and fleet type, most fleet managers expect a significant increase in the number of EVs entering their fleets over the next five years. In fact, almost half of those surveyed stated that 50% or more of their fleet would consist of EVs by 2030.

Wataynikaneyap Power celebrated the energization of both Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug and Wapekeka First Nation, which were connected to Ontario’s power grid on December 14, 2023. “In our community, schools, households, and businesses have been negatively impacted by frequent power outages. Access to reliable energy will lead to many improvements for our people and the community,” said Chief Donny Morris.
