The total value of building permits issued in Canada decreased by $739.5 million (-5.9%) to $11.7 billion in November 2024—a second consecutive monthly decline. Both residential and non-residential sectors contributed to the decrease, reports Statistics Canada. Non-residential construction intentions decreased by $151.4 million (-3.2%) to $4.5 billion in November, driven by Ontario (-$414.2 million).

Ottawa announced funding of over $256.7 million from the Output-Based Pricing System Proceeds Fund for clean electricity and grid modernization projects across Saskatchewan. Eight projects in the province will receive a total of over $256.7 million through the Future Electricity Fund. Indigenous clean energy projects will receive $42 million. Additionally, several projects will be supported with funding from the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways (SREP) Program.

A new battery energy storage facility has broken ground in York Region, Ontario, that, when completed, will be capable of storing up to 120 MW of electricity, with electrical energy output for up to four hours. The installation will consist of interconnected enclosures measuring about 9 x 2 x 3 metres and containing numerous modular lithium-ion batteries.

Statistics Canada has released its building construction price indexes for the fourth quarter of 2024 and, not surprisingly, the cost to build something continues to rise. Residential construction costs increased by 0.8% in Q4 2024, following a 0.9% increase in the previous quarter. Non-residential costs also rose by 0.8%, following a 0.6% increase in the previous quarter.
