A national association representing over 230 member companies that manufacture, distribute, sell, and maintain a range of electrical products in Canada strongly opposes the proposed US tariffs on Canadian imports. “The electrical and automation sector plays a critical role in powering industries across North America, from energy and manufacturing to transportation and construction,” said Electro-Federation Canada president & CEO Carol McGlogan. “Increased costs on essential components and equipment will impact businesses in both countries.”

The Government of Nova Scotia has announced the first board of directors for the newly created Independent Energy System Operator (IESO), which will oversee electricity system operations and the connection of renewable energy projects in the province. These three-year appointments took effect on February 18. Once fully operational by 2026, IESO will take over responsibility for managing Nova Scotia’s electricity system, including determining which power generation facilities are used to meet the province’s energy demands—a role currently handled by Nova Scotia Power.

The Ontario government announced it is spending up to $285 million to advance pre-development work for the proposed Ontario Pumped Storage Project, which would be developed by TC Energy (TCE) in partnership with the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, in the Municipality of Meaford. The facility would function by pumping water from Georgian Bay up to a reservoir during periods of low electricity demand, then release the water back into the bay to generate electricity during periods of high demand.

Year over year, investment in building construction rose 5.8% to $253.8 billion in 2024, reports Statistics Canada. On a constant dollar basis (2017=100), the total value of investment in building construction increased 2.4% to $154.1 billion for the year. Despite these gains, the total value of investment in building construction in constant dollars remained below the record high level reached in 2021 ($171.9 billion).

Federal support of up to $6 million is on its way to Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corp. (NNC) for Phase III front-end engineering and design work to construct a 15-MW to 30-MW waterpower project about 60 kilometres northeast of Iqaluit. Phase III work includes gathering field data, navigating regulatory processes, conducting engineering and design work, developing financial models, and maintaining public engagement.
