With help from the federal Zero-Emission Transit Fund (ZETF), several Ontario communities are studying how to transition their fuel-based public transit vehicles to zero-emission electric buses. Planning activities include route mapping and scheduling, identifying the required charging infrastructure, developing step-by-step processes and timelines for electrifying fleets, and conducting climate adaptation and resilience assessments.

Google has announced support for workforce development in the electrical sector—an essential component in accelerating the AI revolution—by backing the Electrical Training Alliance (etA)—a joint initiative of the U.S.-based National Electrical Contractors Association and IBEW. The support will help enhance training for more than 100,000 electrical workers and 30,000 new apprentices across the United States.

Some refer to her as a trailblazer and a champion, but if you were to ask Margaret Kenequanash, she’d tell you she is just a person who’s helping to get the job done.
Margaret serves as CEO of Wataynikaneyap Power: a company 51% owned by 24 remote northern Ontario First Nations communities that constructed the largest Indigenous-led grid connection project in the province’s history. (Fortis Inc. and other private investors own the remaining 49%.)
At the time of writing, construction is 100% complete. All of Wataynikaneyap Power’s assets are energized; 14 communities are connected to the grid and off diesel. Two more will be connected this year.

Residential and non-residential building construction costs increased 0.8% in the first quarter of 2025, following a similar increase in the previous quarter. The quarterly growth of residential building and non-residential building construction costs increased slightly in Q1, despite the threat of other possible tariffs, notes Statistics Canada. Year over year, construction costs for residential buildings in the census metropolitan area (CMA) composite rose 3.4% in Q1 2025.
