New Brunswick has emerged as one of Canada’s copper theft hotspots, according to Bell, with more than 80 incidents this year alone. “Copper theft is a serious crime that directly threatens the safety and well-being of Canadians,” said Bell Canada’s Mark McDonald. “These thefts are not just about stolen copper [but] can potentially put lives at risk when people can’t call 911 as a result of the damage.”

The total value of investment in building construction decreased by $491.4 million to $21.8 billion in May 2025, Statistics Canada reports. Investment in the residential sector fell 3.0% while the non-residential sector edged down 0.4%. Losses were recorded in the construction of both multi-unit dwellings (-3.4%) and single-family homes (-2.5%).

Statistics Canada reports the total value of building permits issued in Canada rose by $1.4 billion (+12.0%) to reach $13.1 billion in May 2025. Construction intentions for a new hospital in the Niagara census metropolitan area (CMA)—which reached almost 7x the average value of major permits in the institutional component—led the growth in that province’s institutional component.
