Hybrid sales surge as zero-emission vehicle registrations decline in Q2 2025

Despite concerns over automobile tariffs, Q2 2025 marked the highest number of quarterly new motor vehicle registrations since the start of the pandemic. New registrations for hybrid electric vehicles increased 60.7%, while battery EVs dropped nearly 40%. Statistics Canada believes this drop is due to rebates drying up.


Ontario’s Level Up! skilled trades career fairs are back for Fall 2025

The Level Up! career fairs will showcase dozens of Ontario’s 144 skilled trades, from electrician to boilermaker, and have expanded from 21 to 29 days in 12 communities. Over 50,000 people are expected to attend.


Alberta leads decline in institutional building permits, July 2025

The total value of building permits issued in Canada edged down $10.8 million (-0.1%) to $11.9 billion in July 2025, reports Statistics Canada. Overall, the decrease in construction intentions was led by the non-residential sector (-$279.2 million), which was largely offset by a rise in the residential sector (+$268.3 million).

Calgary and Edmonton buck national housing starts slump with strong 2025 growth

According to the latest Housing Supply Report from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp., growth in total housing starts across seven of Canada’s key Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) was flat in the first half of 2025 compared to 2024. Getting a grip on vertical conductor supports

With so many tall buildings being erected, it’s important to remember that conductors—whether installed in a raceway or contained in an armoured or sheathed cable assembly—require special consideration for their support when run vertically over extended distances, writes Code File columnist Diana Madill.

There are distinct differences in the acceptable means of supporting these conductors, which are determined by the installation method and described in CE Code-Part I, Rule 12-120 “Supporting of conductors”.

Fun fact: the earliest version of this rule appeared in the first edition of the Canadian Electrical Code in 1927.
