John Paul II Catholic Secondary School in Ontario’s London District Catholic School Board is the first retrofitted carbon neutral school in Canada. The implemented improvements will greatly reduce GHG emissions, as systems previously required to heat, cool and provide electricity to the school have been brought to near zero emissions.

By cooling and/or heating only the rooms requiring temperature adjustments, VRF systems achieve high energy efficiency and comfort levels while giving the operator greater control over indoor temperatures. They offer many options: for example, a system can be set up to serve an entire building, simultaneously cooling one floor while heating another.

Ottawa launched construction of the Modernized Gatineau Energy Centre: one of four sites that make up the federal district energy system, and which provides heating for 80 buildings and cooling for 67 in the National Capital Region (NCR), including the Parliament buildings. This work is part of the $3.8-billion Energy Services Acquisition Program.

The sportsplex is getting a funding injection of over $15.7 million for energy efficiency retrofits. Work will involve replacing the facility’s refrigeration plants, HVAC system, and lighting. It will also include the installation of a battery energy storage system, ground source heat pump, and 600-kW solar energy system.

ECO Canada released a report on the opportunities and consequent gaps in the building sector as Canada works toward net-zero emissions by 2050. The report finds this workforce does not have the widespread experience or skills required to perform their roles in a manner that achieves energy efficiency goals.
