IESO’s Save on Energy team recognized its 2021 Energy Manager of the Year award recipients, all of whom represent “Ontario’s most innovative professional energy managers who deliver lasting value to organizations across the province”. NRCan’s Office of Energy Efficiency reports the availability of free, self-directed online courses on the 2020 National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB 2020). “If you work in the commercial or institutional buildings sector—especially if you’re a contractor or building designer—these courses are for you,” says NRCan.

Launched by Natural Resources Canada, 50001 Ready is a self-paced, no-cost way for organizations “to build a culture for continual energy improvement that leads to deeper and sustained savings that does not require any external audits or certification”. Participating industrial facilities and buildings can improve facility-level performance, reduce GHG emissions and achieve energy cost savings.

In 2021, the top energy consumers were paper (548.9 PJ) and primary metal manufacturers (487.8 PJ) which, together, accounted for almost half (49.1%) of all energy consumed by the manufacturing sector, Statscan reports. The largest increase in energy consumption occurred in primary metal, which consumed an additional 38.1 PJ (+8.5%) in 2021.

Ottawa has unveiled a new governance model for the National Model Codes development system, adopting “a more collaborative approach with provinces and territories to harmonize construction codes across the country”. The new federal-provincial-territorial (FPT) governance model replaces the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes, which has been responsible for code development in Canada since 1991.
