Air-conditioning inspired by... termite mounds?

New research from Lund University in Sweden suggests the climate control used by termites in their mounds could inspire tomorrow’s “climate-smart” buildings. The ventilation system in termite mounds enables air circulation throughout the structure, helping maintain and regulate temperature and humidity. It is believed that future buildings inspired by these mounds could achieve the same effect as traditional climate control, but with greater energy efficiency and without a CO2 footprint. » Read more

Feds fund three energy-modelling tools to support emissions reductions

The federal government announced a combined spend of over $960,000 for three energy-modelling projects across Canada. Energy models, says NRCan, are an important tool in planning the pathways to net-zero as they use data and software to demonstrate potential outcomes related to changes in the energy system. » Read more

St. Malo Arena to improve mechanical and electrical efficiencies

Ottawa is spending more than $3.7 million to upgrade the St. Malo Arena in St. Malo, Man. The funding will enable renovations that include an expansion to increase the facility’s overall size by about 10,000 square feet. Improvements to the mechanical and electrical systems that service the existing arena will help reduce its energy consumption by an estimated 76.7% and GHG emissions by 120 tonnes annually. » Read more
