As part of Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Challenge, Humber has been awarded $1 million from the federal government to fund the institution’s sustainable infrastructure project, SWITCH. The project will upgrade the heating and cooling systems at the North campus, and also reduce the college’s natural gas use by switching from a steam-based system to a hot water system, which generates heat using mostly electricity.

Providence Health Care is finding ways to care for its long-term care residents while lowering its environmental impact. In collaboration with FortisBC, it has implemented innovative and cost-effective energy-efficiency upgrades to its heating equipment at one of its long-term care homes in Vancouver. The organization went even further by subscribing to FortisBC’s Renewable Natural Gas program—the first healthcare organization in B.C. to do so.

Stationary battery manufacturer Hithium’s 300Ah cell-based modules feature the company’s proprietary immersion liquid-cooling technology. The first power station to be entirely supplied with liquid-cooling battery products features Hithium’s technology, with the manufacturer serving as core provider for the 140MWh plant in China’s Guangdong Province. Hithium’s 300Ah cell broke ground with its 12,000 cycle life and <2% degradation in the first 1000 cycles.

Energy efficiency in supermarkets is an area in which significant savings can be achieved with relatively low investment and good payback times. Accordingly, Danfoss announced the opening of its flagship, 21st-century supermarket building, which is expected to be approximately 50% more energy-efficient compared to a typical supermarket with a first-generation CO2 refrigeration system and no energy efficiency solutions.

The Low Carbon Training Program aims to equip professionals working in architecture, engineering, construction, and commercial real estate—including building owners and operators—“with a common language and understanding of low-carbon strategies and solutions”.

Organizers of The MEET Show 2024 announce the addition of Donald (Don) Colliver to its speaker lineup. Colliver has been involved in the energy usage and efficiency of buildings for over 40 years, say organizers. He is professor in the Biosystems Engineering Department, formerly director of Graduate Studies in the BAE Department, and director of the Kentucky Industrial Assessment Center at the University of Kentucky.
