Nominations are rolling in for Energy Manager Canada’s EM Honours awards program, which celebrates innovative and impactful projects and solutions driving energy efficiency and decarbonization across Canada’s built environment. We are extending the deadline for EM Honours by two weeks to give more people a chance to submit their Nominations.

ASHRAE is accepting abstracts for the 2025 Buildings XVI International Conference, which is co-organized with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. “This conference draws heavily on the advanced technical knowledge of our global experts and takes place every three years [...]” explained André Desjarlais, conference chair. The conference steering committee is seeking residential and commercial application-focused abstracts on the development of high-impact technologies and processes that are cost-effective, reduce energy use and environmental consequences.

The district energy system in the City of Edmonton’s Blatchford neighbourhood is getting a $23.7-million funding boost from Ottawa to help add 13.1 MW of heating and 12.3 MW of cooling capacity to the existing district energy sharing system (DESS). The DESS expansion project will help accommodate development and growth within the community, says Natural Resources Canada. The total project value is $79.2 million, with the remainder being provided by the City of Edmonton.

The Canada Green Buildings Strategy details the federal government’s plans to increase energy efficiency across the housing sector, including a commitment to ban the installation of oil furnace systems in new construction as soon as 2028 and financial incentives for Canadians to purchase and install heat pumps in their homes.

Vancouver’s Central Library in Library Square is undergoing energy efficiency upgrades with the help of over $5.9 million in combined federal and provincial funding. “I am pleased to announce the investment in these important energy upgrades to the Central Library in Library Square,” said Hon. Hedy Fry, MP for Vancouver Centre. “These green improvements will enable the library to thrive, with better air quality and extra cost savings for increased quality of services.”

The governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island announced they will co-deliver the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) program in that province. NRCan says OHPA funding of up to $15,000 per eligible homeowner will not only “provide thousands more dollars to Prince Edward Islanders to switch to a heat pump”, but will allow for additional measures such as switching to electric water heaters, supplemental electric resistance heaters, electrical upgrades, and the safe removal of oil tanks.
