The current residential HVAC workforce employs thousands of technicians whose skills need to be updated, says Environment and Climate Change Canada.

FortisBC Energy Inc. is introducing a new rebate of $10,000 or more for eligible customers who replace their home’s older gas heating system with an electric heat pump and high-efficiency gas furnace. The dual-fuel system includes an electric heat pump for cooling during warm weather and space heating during milder conditions, and a high-efficiency gas furnace for heating in colder weather.

Markham District Energy (MDE) has broken ground on the world’s largest wastewater energy transfer (WET) project at Markham, Ont.’s Low Carbon Energy Centre (LCEC). When complete, the project is expected to reduce MDE’s carbon emissions from thermal energy production by 30,000 tonnes per year, and add to the LCEC’s current carbon reductions of 13,000 tonnes per year.

Canada Infrastructure Bank and Efficiency Capital have formalized a $50-million partnership to help small- and medium-sized building owners across Canada decarbonize their facilities. Retrofit solutions could include upgrades to lighting, roof insulation, and HVAC, or the introduction of heat pumps, automation systems, electric vehicle charging stations, and renewable energy sources.
