Businesses in Canada spent $2.8 billion on in-house energy-related research & development in 2022, up 17.2% from 2021, reports Statistics Canada, marking the second consecutive year with significant spending increases. Topping that list is Energy Efficiency, which saw the strongest growth in in-house R&D spending, up by $107 million from 2021 to $594 million in 2022. (Energy Efficiency is one of the “energy-related technologies” identified by Statistics Canada, which also include fossil fuels, renewables, nuclear, etc.)

The RBC report “Climate briefing: a smart heating solution for Canada’s fiscally-strained municipalities” finds that scaling district heating systems could lower the building sector’s emissions across the country’s largest cities by 36%, and help municipalities meet their sustainability and emissions-reduction goals.

Canadians are staying put and focusing on improving their current homes, including renovations that would improve their energy efficiency. Financeit Canada conducted a survey among 1514 online Canadians (Angus Reid Forum members), and found that 94% of homeowners plan to stay in their current home for at least the next year, and a quarter plan to invest in renovations.

The Evolv1 building in the University of Waterloo Research & Technology Park in Ontario has become electrically self-sufficient following the installation of a DC-optimized rooftop and carport solar PV system. Evolv1 is a collaboration between building owner The Cora Group, Stantec, Sustainable Waterloo Region, David Johnston Research & Technology Park, and anchor tenant EY.

Golden Windows Ltd., an Ontario-based manufacturer of windows and doors, is investing over $30 million to boost manufacturing capacity at its Kitchener facility. As part of this investment, Golden is receiving over $4.5 million through the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund stream of the Regional Development Program.
