Energy service company SOFIAC has signed on with two educational institutions in Quebec to provide financing and manage their decarbonization and energy efficiency projects. Collège Bourget (Rigaud) seeks to achieve an 87% reduction in its GHG emissions, while Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy (Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures) is aiming for an over 40% reduction.

The Nuclear Reactor Heat Recovery Project will harness excess heat from McMaster University’s research nuclear reactor, redirecting it from the cooling towers and using it to heat the AN Bourns Science Building. The initiative was developed through a partnership between Mechanical Engineering professor Jim Cotton, Facility Services, and Nuclear Operations & Facilities. “This project highlights the power of collaboration between research and campus operations,” said Andy Knights, acting vice-president, Research.

In Yukon, the Affordable Heat Pump Program is receiving triple the funding to help homeowners switch to heat pump systems. This program was launched in December 2024 with funding from the federal government’s Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) program and the Low Carbon Economy Fund. The program proved so popular that it was fully subscribed within three weeks.
