Atlantic Windows has announced that Greg Dickie will step down from his role as president at a future date in 2025. Dickie began his career at Atlantic Windows in 2003 at the age of 26 in the role of industrial engineer. In 2005, he was promoted to director of operations, serving on the senior leadership team, then succeeding Rob Miller as president in 2015. Over Greg’s tenure at Atlantic Windows, the company has realized triple digit growth.

The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) has filed a legal application in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice against the City of Toronto over the escalation of the Toronto Green Standard (TGS) performance measures. RESCON is seeking a mandatory order that would enforce the Building Code Act and prohibit the city from imposing building regulations on planning applications because they are beyond the legal authority of the city. RESCON agrees that the city has authority under the Planning Act over land-use planning matters and can impose site-specific controls over the development of land within city boundaries.

Participants in National Fenestration Rating Council programs for windows should be aware of the latest program bulletin clarifying that, effective Jan. 1, their labels on products sold in Canada will need to display a C (see photo). The artwork is available from NFRC. Labels for products only sold in the U.S. do not need to change.

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has updated a specification document providing a standardized comparative analysis procedure for determining the structural integrity of window and door products. AAMA 2502-24 Comparative Analysis Procedure for Window and Door Products, an FGIA document, is now available for purchase in the FGIA online store. This document was last updated in 2019.

The total value of building permits in Canada increased by $1.3 billion (+11.5%) to $13.0 billion in September, reaching the second-highest level since the start of the new series in January 2017. Ontario's construction intentions grew by $1.2 billion (+25.0%) to $5.9 billion in September 2024, leading gains in both the non-residential and residential sectors. On a constant dollar basis (2017=100), the total value of building permits rose 11.6% in September.

In 2022, more than 320,000 small businesses operated in rural and small town (RST) areas, representing 14.6 percent of all small businesses in Canada. In contrast, nearly 1.9 million (85.4 percent) small businesses were active in functional urban areas. Additionally, over 9,500 (13.2 percent) medium-sized businesses operated in RST areas in 2022, while 63,215 (86.8 percent) were based in functional urban areas.

Natural Resources Canada is working on a new label that will be required to be displayed on manufactured window products that are shipped across provincial borders or imported into Canada. The label would display the same energy efficiency information as NFRC, CSA and Energy Star labels, and could act to replace them if the manufacturer desired. Adam Buist is helping to develop the new label and joins Fenestration Conversations to explain the work, explore the benefits and challenges, and update us on the status of the project.
