The Gendreau family, Canadian owners of Garaga Inc., a North American manufacturer of garage doors, announced the acquisition of Novatech Group Inc. Since its foundation by Raymond Ouellette in 1982 in Sainte-Julie, Novatech has grown into a company offering a complete range of products, including glass processing, manufacture of door glass, steel doors and patio doors. Novatech has 16 plants and distribution centre in Canada and the United States, as well as an innovation centre for research and development of new products since 2009.

Owens Corning and Masonite announced an agreement under which Owens Corning acquired all outstanding shares of Masonite for $133 per share. The implied transaction value was approximately $3.9 billion.

Adam Buist, a standards engineer from Natural Resources Canada, told Fenestration Canada’s Spring Conference in Kananaskis, Alta., that his department is conducting an industry pre-consultation on a proposal for a new federal labeling regime for windows. The idea is that window products, by 2028, would be required under the federal Energy Efficiency Act to display a standardized label replacing Energy Star and/or NFRC labels in order to be shipped across provincial or national borders.

Vaughan, Ont.,-based screen supplier Screenco successfully acquired the assets of Screens of Mass Construction and Quality Screen Company, with locations in Dallas, Texas and Las Vegas, Nevada. The Screenco Group of Companies has been in business for over 40 years, with locations across Canada and the Midwest United States.

Fenestration Canada finalized an agreement with Fenestration Manitoba, officially integrating it as a chapter of Fenestration Canada. The management, branding, and event planning of Fenestration Manitoba is now directly overseen by Fenestration Canada. The selection of chapter chairs and co-chairs was made in December.

Larry, 66, bravely fought a two-year battle with bladder cancer, having recently undergone a very successful surgery to remove it. He was able to be home recovering, and unforeseen complications sent him back to the hospital for additional surgeries. Unfortunately, the strain on his body was too much and he passed peacefully with his family and close friends by his side on March 22, 2024.

"With heavy, and saddened hearts we announce the passing of Trimbo Window Manufacturing’s founder,Damiano Trimboli, at the age of 77. Damiano will be sorrowfully missed by his loving wife, Rita."

As far back as 2005, the practice of sealing the weather barrier of a house to the frame of the window in an effort to control moisture penetration was questioned enough to justify seven years of research at the Institute for Research in Construction of the National Research Council of Canada. The guiding principle that came out of that detailed scientific research was, “Don’t try to stop the wind and the rain on the same plane.” Few people paid any attention.

The steadily rising concern with environmental protection has brought concerns about the amount of plastic we put into landfills and oceans. Durable plastic products, such as vinyl window frames, are in danger of being swept up in government efforts to mitigage these risks. Tony Vella of Vision Extrusions Group and chair of the Vinyl Insitute of Canada has been working hard to educate decision-makers about the difference between durable PVC and single-use plastics. He joins the Conversation to let us know about the proposed federal Plastics Registry, the state of play with the issue generally and his efforts to bring some sanity to the public discussion.

Natural Resources Canada is working on a new label that will be required to be displayed on manufactured window products that are shipped across provincial borders or imported into Canada. The label would display the same energy efficiency information as NFRC, CSA and Energy Star labels, and could act to replace them if the manufacturer desired. Adam Buist is helping to develop the new label and joins Fenestration Conversations to explain the work, explore the benefits and challenges, and update us on the status of the project.

By Anton Van Dyk’s count, there are now up to 15 separate areas where fenestration products have to demonstrate compliance to one regulatory regime or another. Embodied carbon will soon become another, yet both end users and manufacturers have been slow to understand things like Environmental Product Declarations and how they will affect product development. Van Dyk and Layton think the approach to lowering the carbon cost of our buildings has created confusion. They join the podcast to outline their vision for how we should go forward.
