Let's show our support for Canadian glass standards by chiming in on the public review for CAN/CGSB safety glazing and insulating glass updates. These standards languished for a long time but have been revised by popular demand.

CAN/CGSB 12.1 Safety glazing and CAN/CGSB 12.8 Insulating glass units are available for public review. Drafts of the updated standards are available on request by emailing ncr.cgsb-ongc@tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca. Proposed changes to the standards include: CAN/CGSB 12.1 Safety glazing Expanded classifications to include a section on vacuum insulating glass (VIG). Various editorial fixes related to the CGSB Style Manual.

Donald Trump got inaugurated on Monday and has promised to impose 25-percent tariffs on all foreign goods entering the United States. It’s created a firestorm of concern across the country and for good reason. Should the tariffs actually be imposed as described for any appreciable period of time, economists are predicting a recession in Canada to the tune of 2.5 to 4.5 percent of GDP.

The Western Retail Lumber Association used its trade show, taking place now in Edmonton, as the platform for announcing a major rebranding initiative. After in-depth consultation with its members and board, partners, and key stakeholders, the WRLA has been renamed as Supply-Build Canada. The change is effective today. “As the association expands its advocacy efforts and external partnerships, the ‘Western Retail Lumber Association’ name became a misnomer,” says association president Liz Kovach.

There was a new person at the Fenestration Canada Spring Conference in Kananaskis, Alta., this year. Jennifer Lortie, director of residential sales for Fabelta, lit up the room in several education sessions with her passionate opinions and insightful observations, all informed by an obviously deep knowledge of fenestration manufacturing and standards.

My, how warranties have changed! When I joined the fenestration industry in 1984, the typical product warranty for a window was five years on a sealed unit and one year on everything else. Warranties on installation, where they existed, might be 30 days. Of course, much of the glass being sold was double glazed and not even a sealed unit. The main limitation on sealed unit warranties was a disclaimer on cracked glass.
