Forging ahead, how are fire departments managing recruitment, retention their impacts on response? Tune in live to participate in the Q&A.
The panel of Fire Chiefs:
Tom DeSorcy: Tom became the first paid firefighter in his hometown of Hope, B.C., when he became Fire Chief in 2000. Tom is very active with the Fire Chiefs’ Association of British Columbia as communications director and conference committee chair.
Judy Unsworth: Judy is the Deputy Fire Chief for the town of Strathmore, Alberta and is the 2019 Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs Volunteer Chief of the Year. She also received an Executive Chief Fire Officer bursary to put towards her attainment of EFCO status.
Chris Harrow: Chris is the Fire Chief in Minto, Ont. He is a graduate from fire programs at Lakeland College and Dalhousie University and holds a graduate certificate in Advanced Care Paramedics from Conestoga College. Chris is a former vice president of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs.
Michael Seth: Michael is the Director of Emergency Services and Fire Chief for the Cape Breton Municipality and City of Sydney in Nova Scotia. Michael is a Six Nations of the Grand River (Tuscarora) band member and a second-generation firefighter, starting his career with Six Nations when he was 14-years-old. He was integral in creating the Six Nations Paramedic Services as its first manager and was Fire Chief and Community Emergency Management Coordinator with Six Nations Council.

Training: The new Back to Basics
Mark van der Feyst will present “Round Table Fast Attack: Training Today’s Fire Service”, which will address current training challenges and how to surmount them, along with emphasizing the basics and exercising the muscle memory.
Mark van der Feyst has been in the fire service since 1999 and is currently a full-time firefighter with the WFD. He is an international instructor teaching in Canada, the United States, FDIC and India. He is a local level suppression instructor for the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy, the lead Author of Fire Engineering’s Residential Fire Rescue book, The First Five Minutes DVD, The 21st Century Firefighter DVD and President of Firestar Services Inc.

Mental health: Leading the way forward
Presented by: Brayden Osborn, Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department
Learn about unique mental health initiatives that are helping members, removing stigma and leading the way in changing and continuing this important conversation. Lt. Brayden Osborn of the Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department will share department success stories that have come from its initiatives alongside techniques for your building your toolbox for mental health.
Brayden Osborn: Brayden is a Lieutenant with the Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Having been with the department for 5 years this August, Brayden has been committed to his ongoing development within the fire service. He has completed a myriad of courses with a strong focus on mental health. A few years back a course on "Resiliency on the Front Lines" kickstarted his passion regarding mental health in the fire service and led to the development of "The Dashwood Mental Resilience Booklet". Holding a Bachelor of Business Administration, owning and operating a small consulting business, and working in the construction industry, Brayden has a unique skillset and experience.
