Smoke inhalation causes eight times as many deaths as burns in structural fires because of toxic gases. These gases can include carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN)- Known as the “toxic twins.” Together, they create a chemical asphyxiant that can cause heart attacks at the time of the fire and cancer decades later.
Toxic gases like carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) can be present on the Fire Ground.
While either by itself is dangerous or even deadly, the combination of the two are exponentially worse, earning them the distinctive name, the Toxic Twins. Visible smoke is a good guideline; however, the Toxic Twins are both colorless. Watch the video for more details.
