The fire chief in Kingsville, Ont., was charged Saturday with two counts each of sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a minor. Robert Kissner was immediately suspended, with pay, by the municipality. Kissner was released Monday on $15,000 bail and must abide several conditions. The alleged assaults occurred Dec. 6 and Dec. 8.

The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management will review service levels in Sault Ste. Marie, where council has reduced the number of firefighters on truck to three from four and is cutting 20 firefighters through attrition. The firefighters union requested the review, which is to begin in January and will include multiple site visits.

After years of lobbying by the International Association of Fire Fighters, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball announced Monday that firefighters who experience 11 types of cancers will be presumed to have become ill on the job and will quality for workers compensation. The coverage applies to career and volunteer firefighters but takes effect at different times. The announcement did not include presumptive coverage for work-related mental illnesses such as PTSD.
