A Winnipeg firefighter was treated in hospital after exposure to a substance believed to be fentanyl last Wednesday. Firefighters responded to a report of an unconscious driver in a vehicle and one firefighter who came into contact with the patient immediately began displaying symptoms of opioid poisoning. The firefighter was taken to hospital, treated and released; however, the firefighter has not yet returned to work.

A discredited former engineer has been found not guilty of criminal negligence in a deadly mall collapse near Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. The engineer, Robert Wood, had declared the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake, Ont., structurally sound just weeks before the collapse killed two women in June 2012.

A large fire in southwest Calgary, Alta., destroyed a construction site and damaged neighbouring apartment buildings on Monday night, leaving dozens of residents without a place to sleep. Fire officials told Global News they received numerous calls about the fire, which could be seen from blocks away; some callers reported flames up to 30 metres high. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
