Fire-service equipment provider MSA has completed its $215-million acquisition of gear maker Globe. MSA chairman and CEO William Lambert said Monday the transaction boosts the company's position as a leader in the North American market for firefighter personal protective equipment.

Toronto Mayor John Tory announced Monday the city’s firefighters will soon be equipped with naloxone kits. Since Thursday, 27 overdose cases have been reported and four people have died. Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop told City News that 2,900 firefighters will undergo medically supervised training at a cost to the department of about $40,000.

A forest fire in northeast New Brunswick forced the evacuation of 25 people from their homes on Miscou Island Saturday. Fire prevention officer Roger Collet told The Canadian Press that the fire had spread to peat bogs, where it may smoulder and possibly re-ignite. Collet said the fire has affected an estimated 50 hectares.

Evacuation orders were issued late Saturday evening for the Village of Clinton, which has a population of 650, as well as a number of properties north and south of the village. The nearby Elephant Hill wildfire has kept the community on evacuation alert for weeks, and is continuing to move closer to the village.

A 62-year-old man died after an early morning house fire in a west Toronto neighbourhood on Sunday. Approximately 40 firefighters responded to a 911 call about a fire at the three-story home at 3:30 a.m. Firefighters found the resident on the second floor, in critical condition. Toronto paramedics transported him to the hospital where he died from his injuries.
