The federal government announced $80 million in funding, distributed over the next five years, to create an annual Firefighters’ National Memorial Day. The memorial day will fall on the second Sunday of September each year, serving as a tribute to public safety officers who have died in the line of duty. This year, Firefighters’ National Memorial Day falls on Sept. 10.

Firefighters in Hamilton, Ont., are filing work-related cancer claims at twice the provincial rate. According to data provided to CBC News from Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, 22 firefighters were considered for work-related cancer benefits under the board's presumptive legislation for every 100,000 people in Hamilton. The provincial per capita rate is 11 per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Two people have been charged in connection to a fatal Edmonton house fire that killed a five-month-old baby last Tuesday. Edmonton police arrested former tenants Bronson Woycenko, 19, and Jessica Tammerand, 18, on Friday. Woycenko was charged with second-degree murder, arson and disregard for human life. Tammerand was charged with arson and disregard for human life.

A highrise fire in Brampton, Ont., sent seven to hospital early Saturday morning. According to police, more than 25 residents were displaced after the fire began on the building’s 8th floor around 4:15 a.m. Const. Bancroft Wright told CBC News that the fire was intentionally set. Officials from Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal and Peel police's criminal investigation bureau are investigating.
