Union president warns of firefighter shortage

Unionized firefighters say the Terrace, B.C., fire department is understaffed and they’re concerned it won’t be able to maintain a safe and effective response to calls. Demand on resources is expected to only increase with an LNG-fueled economic boom.


Fire forces closure of Manitoba hospital

The hospital in Pinawa, Man., is closed until further notice after an electrical issue filled the building with smoke and left it without heat. A spokesperson for the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority said in a statement that a boiler in the town's hospital experienced an electrical failure.


OAFC supports labour relations reform

The Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC) is applauding the provincial government for introducing legislation that will allow full-time firefighters to volunteer as firefighters in their communities. The legislation, known as Bill 57, the Restoring Trust, Transparency and Accountability Act, 2018, was introduced in the Legislature mid-November.
