The Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) and the Fire Underwriters Survey of Canada named the winners of the Fire Chief of the Year Awards during Virtually Fire Rescue Canada's 2020 Celebration of Excellence. The awards went to Fire Chief Ken McMullen of Red Deer Fire and Emergency Services (Career) and Fire Chief Randy Schroeder, Town of Mayerthorpe Fire Department (Volunteer).

Canada has experienced a lower than average number of wildfires this year thanks in part to COVID-19 restrictions, as well as cooler temperatures and wetter conditions compared to the United States, where devastating and record-setting wildfires have been raging across large swaths of the west coast this year.

Without any doubt, 2020 has presented a number of unprecedented challenges for first responders. In March, for the first time in more than 28 years, I stepped away from being directly connected with the fire service. I did so to take on the responsibility for leading the City of Toronto’s response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
