OAFC announces 2021 executive committee and board of directors

The Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC) announced its 2021 board of directors and executive committee.


Nanaimo to transition fire dispatch to City of Surrey

The City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo in British Columbia are transitioning fire dispatch services from Nanaimo FireComm to the City of Surrey. Nanaimo FireComm is operated by the City of Nanaimo and the decision to transition to a new service provider was made due to the technology upgrades that would be required for the Next Generation 911 platform and rising operational costs.


Study says Canadian forest fires have declined since 1989 peak

Are there more forest fires in recent years in Canada? A new study says not really. It may seem surprising given the news reports of massive wildfires in Canada, but the study shows there’s actually been a downward trend nationally in the last 30 years.

Evaluating drone pilot skills

It is estimated that several hundred Canadian public safety agencies have acquired remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS). Approximately one third of those agencies are fire service oriented. Canadian fire departments that have acquired RPAS and are using them with great success gain additional situational awareness at the scenes of structure and wildland fires, as well as natural and man-made disasters. RPAS tasks include providing real-time video to fire scene management, penetrating hot zones such as HAZMAT spill areas and potential BLEVE evacuation zones, post disaster damage assessment, and post-response assessment and evaluation for training purposes. Suspicious fire at Fifty Point Marina causes $185,000 in damage

Damage is estimated at more than $185,000 following a fire Friday at Fifty Point Marina in Hamilton, Ont., that officials say is suspicious. Crews were called to the marina at 4:18 a.m. and found five boats on fire, according to the Hamilton Fire Department. » Learn more

Five people injured in London house fire
