The provincial government will spend $4.2 million to help fund 12 mass timber demonstration and research projects around British Columbia — including Saanich’s new fire hall. The grants include $500,000 for the redevelopment of Saanich Fire Station No. 2, which will demonstrate how mass timber can be used in a post-disaster building designed to withstand emergencies. Surrey’s fire chief says public safety could be in jeopardy if COVID-19 cases continue to rise among his rank and file. Larry Thomas of the Surrey Fire Service says there is not a lot of workplace transmission taking place among firefighters while attending calls thanks to the use of personal protective equipment, but an increase in community transmission is impacting first responders. The City of Vancouver is providing funding for a permanent position to lead a program aimed at supporting people who have survived overdoses. Mayor Kennedy Stewart says a “very important” pilot program that paired firefighters with staff from Vancouver Coastal Health will stay in place to help people break the cycle of overdoses by connecting them with support services. Well, in our case something as simple as a dirty aerial ladder was more of a visual distraction than a function.

The biggest challenge to the fire service in seeing greater acceptance of residential fire sprinklers has been education – education of all players: builders; home buyers; and even our own colleagues. This lack of education about the benefits of home fire sprinklers, and even how sprinkler systems function, continues to stymie us, and we continue to see the proliferation of myths and misconceptions.

The Toronto community was hit hard this year when a fire in a home with no working smoke alarms claimed the lives of four people. The Toronto Fire Services began community outreach following the tragedy, reminding residents of the importance of having working smoke alarms installed throughout their home. First Alert supported this outreach with a donation of alarms to the local ward Councillor for distribution and commends Toronto Fire for their swift response to community risk reduction. For fire departments conducting CRR initiatives, First Alert offers discounted pricing on purchases of select quantities.
