Provincial government kicks in $500,000 for Saanich fire hall

The provincial government will spend $4.2 million to help fund 12 mass timber demonstration and research projects around British Columbia — including Saanich’s new fire hall. The grants include $500,000 for the redevelopment of Saanich Fire Station No. 2, which will demonstrate how mass timber can be used in a post-disaster building designed to withstand emergencies. The Times Colonist reports.


Surrey fire chief calls for first responder vaccinations as COVID-19 cases rise among staff

Surrey’s fire chief says public safety could be in jeopardy if COVID-19 cases continue to rise among his rank and file. Larry Thomas of the Surrey Fire Service says there is not a lot of workplace transmission taking place among firefighters while attending calls thanks to the use of personal protective equipment, but an increase in community transmission is impacting first responders. Global News reports.


Vancouver fire captain appointed to permanent position leading overdose response team

The City of Vancouver is providing funding for a permanent position to lead a program aimed at supporting people who have survived overdoses. Mayor Kennedy Stewart says a “very important” pilot program that paired firefighters with staff from Vancouver Coastal Health will stay in place to help people break the cycle of overdoses by connecting them with support services.
