The Langford Fire Rescue department in British Columbia is launching a nationwide theme for Emergency Preparedness Week called Be Ready for Anything. Langford Fire Rescue Chief Chris Aubrey said the department is launching a couple of initiatives through social media accounts that speak to the importance of being ready for emergencies, including how to build emergency kits. Many, if not all firefighters, have been taught to always use two firefighters when carrying or using a ground ladder. While I have been advocating the use of one firefighter in these instances, there are times when two firefighters may be available or needed to be used for ground ladder operations. At the time that the Transport Canada exemption was issued, Mark Smith, the Ports Toronto fire chief and emergency response and planning manager, had been in the process of investigating how to improve the environmental and safety performance of the fire suppressant foams in use at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. Two new forest fires were discovered in the city of Timmins in northwestern Ontario on Saturday, the province said. One of the fires, known as Kenora 11, was reported at about 5 p.m. Saturday. CBC News reports.

The Trans-Canada Highway was shut down in both directions west of Calgary on Friday evening due to a grass fire. Shortly before 8 p.m., Alberta 511 tweeted that the highway had been fully reopened. Global News reports.

Fire ripped through a shuttered hotel on Niagara River Parkway near the Chippawa community in Niagara Falls on Saturday. Niagara Falls Fire Department received a report of fire at the former inn on the parkway at about 7:30 p.m. The St. Catharines Standard reports.
