Seventeen Canadians per day died from opioids in 2020: Public Health Agency of Canada

Canada’s public health agency says the COVID-19 pandemic drove an increasingly deadly overdose crisis last year that continues to take lives and corrode communities. Grim new numbers from the agency show 6,214 people suffered opioid-related deaths in 2020—17 deaths per day on average—compared to fewer than 4,000 in 2019.


Two more Catholic churches burned down in B.C.’s Interior

Two more Catholic churches on reserves in British Columbia’s southern Interior burned down Saturday morning. CBC News reports.


Colwood grieves sudden passing of Fire Chief John Cassidy

The City of Colwood is mourning the sudden passing of its fire Chief, John Cassidy on Wednesday. In a release Thursday night, the city says Colwood Fire, along with BC Ambulance Services, responded to a medical call on June 23 and provided care for the Chief. He later died in hospital. The other day, I heard someone say “don’t burn your bridges,” a phrase that at first conjures up what I consider to be obvious. You shouldn’t destroy the path you used to get to where you’re going, as you may need to use it again to get back to where you came from. Peachland fire destroys one home, becomes wildfire

At least one house was destroyed by a house fire southwest of Peachland, B.C., on Saturday. Peachland Mayor Cindy Fortin said the fire broke out earlier on Saturday at a property on Marantha Drive near Princeton Avenue. It then spread into the countryside. CBC News reports. » Learn more
