There were 131 fires in Nunavut in 2020, resulting in two deaths, six injuries and $5.7 million in losses. According to the territorial fire marshal office's report, which was tabled last week in the Nunavut Legislature, nearly all of the fires were linked to smoking, open flames, stoves and heaters. The Amherstburg Fire Department is going to be operating a little bit differently in the future. Council has given the green light for fire officials to move to the planning stages for an $8-million project which will see the construction of a new, state-of-the-art station on the site of the current Station 2 while Stations 1 and 3 will be closed and consolidated at a new site at the Libro Centre. There’s a change in leadership at the fire department for the Town of Ste. Anne. Deputy Mayor Yvan St. Vincent says council has hired Bob Saindon to guide the department and hopefully grow the team of firefighters. Steinbach Online reports.

Last edition we looked at working on the ground ladder and some of the other options that are available to use in place of the traditional leg lock. For this article, we are going to focus on getting on and off the ladder. Our study so far has been with the ground ladder, but we are going to include the aerial ladder in our topic this time as it’s very applicable to both. By Mark van der Feyst

Laura King, the NFPA’s public education representative for Canada, joins host Fire Chief Tom DeSorcy for a conversation about this year’s Fire Prevention Week. Running Oct. 3-9, this year’s Fire Prevention Week is called Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety and focuses on teaching the public about what the sounds made by smoke and carbon monoxide alarms means. King and DeSorcy talk about the importance of public education, NFPA’s calls-to-action and goals, as well as how the organization is working towards making Fire Prevention Week more accessible through virtual events and translations.
